Demeanor and Disposition: Juveniles’ Self-presentation during Case Processing and Impacts on System Responses

Abstract

The study of the relationship between demeanor on the street and likelihood of arrest has a long and rich history; however, little research exists specific to juvenile delinquency as it relates to youths’ demeanor and self-presentation during contact with criminal justice authority figures. Using Florida secondary data, the present study builds upon this body of literature and takes a systems-based approach by exploring the connections between arresting offense, youth’s demeanor during initial post-arrest case processing, youth’s recidivism risk assessment(s), and the ultimate criminal justice system response. The session concludes with policy and protocol recommendations to optimize systemic response to delinquent youths.
