Personality, Criminological Constructs, and Offending: Direct and Conditional Effects

Abstract

The role of personality in mainstream criminology has been largely limited to analyses incorporating self-control. Perhaps part of the reason for this is that criminologists do not know how personality can be integrated with mainstream criminological constructs. This presentation focuses on both the partial effects of personality on offending, as well as how personality moderates the relationships between various criminological constructs and offending. This is a longitudinal analysis based on a sample of adolescent offenders. The results have implications for criminological theories and research.
