The purpose of this study was to better understand the experiences and perceptions of incarcerated and released defendants on the bail process, and in particular on the use of money for pretrial release. We aimed to understand the reasons why defendants who are offered the option of a money bond do not post it. In addition, we aimed to understand potential collateral consequences of not posting bond for defendants who are incarcerated, as well as the impact of the money bail process for released defendants. This mixed-methods study was conducted across five jails in three states, and within five pretrial service agencies, and included both quantitative surveys and in-depth qualitative one-on-one interviews. Preliminary findings from this research project will be presented.
