Race and Hispanic Origin of Victims and Offenders of Nonfatal Violent Victimization, 2012-15

Abstract

In 2012, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) changed the manner in which information on the perceived race and Hispanic origin of the offender was collected in the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). These changes were made in order to be consistent with the Office of Management and Budget’s Standards for Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity that specifies the minimum number of categories for statistical reporting on race. In the past year, BJS has received many requests from the media and other stakeholders seeking statistics on the race and Hispanic origin of victims and their offender(s); and plans to publish updated estimates using the most recent data on this topic. This presentation will focus on race and Hispanic origin of victims and offenders of nonfatal violent victimization using 2012-2015 NCVS data.
