Gang Culture on the Virtual Corner: Examining Local Gang Culture Through Online Rap Videos

Abstract

The online presence of gang members is a growing area of research, with some scholars arguing that the “virtual corner” now supplements the street corner and enables gang life (Lauger & Densley, forthcoming; Pyrooz et al, 2013). Gang members specifically participate in local underground rap music and post rap videos online for a potentially large audience to view. This study examines the content of 78 rap videos posted on YouTube by gang members in Buffalo, NY between 2009 and 2015. This rap music is a cultural entity that provides insights about local gang and street culture. Buffalo Rappers develop cultural ideas about the justified use of violence, the nature of legitimacy in gang and street life, and the role gun violence for preserving life.
