Why Do They Devaite? Searching for a Criminological Explanation to Police Devience

Abstract

Police corruption is one of the controversial issues of the recent years at global level. There have been several explanations and studies about why police are deviating from the acceptable lines of behavior. Yet, a thorough understanding of these deviant behaviors from the lenses of criminological theory is limited, at best. This study is based on a large data set collected from a nationally organized police department outside the US. Using the self-reported deviant behaviors of the participants as dependent variables, the major goal of the current paper is to test the hypotheses derived from the low self-control and learning theories of the criminology. The findings are discussed for the practical and theoretical implications.
