Rating versus Ranking Items in Survey Methodology

Abstract

There is considerable debate amongst methodologists as to whether rating or ranking systems are preferred for evaluating items in surveys. In this paper, we compare ranking versus rating methods in order to determine subjective quality scores for academic journals in criminal justice and criminology. We compare ranking methods and rating methods and compare both to the objective SSCI Impact Factors and Google Scholar ratings to assess reliability of subjective measures.
