More Than Just ‘Either Or’: Transgender Students’ Experiences with Gay-Straight Alliances in British Columbia

Abstract

Gay-straight alliances (GSA) in high schools are meant to counteract homophobia and transphobia and provide LGBTQ youth with a safe environment to express their sexual or gender orientation. Past research on GSAs indicates that these safe spaces have the potential to enhance visibility and a sense of pride in LGBTQ youth and their allies. Limited attention, however, has been given to transgender youth and their experiences in a GSA. Using a qualitative methodological approach with 11 participants, findings support the notion that there is a need for LGBTQ safe spaces in high schools. However, transgender participants expressed feelings of exclusion and marginalization in these clubs. Using a peacemaking criminological approach, it is argued that GSA advisors and peer leaders must pay closer attention to fostering an inclusive environment, with specific emphasis on transgender individuals. Recommendations include enhancing access to resources and training and widening the scope of the GSA title.
