Examining capable guardianship in the sexual victimization of college students: A test of routine activities theory

Abstract

Sexual victimization among college students is an unfortunate and detrimental occurrence. Approximately 1 in 5 college women and 1 in 16 college men experience sexual victimization (Krebs, Lindquist, Warner, Fisher, & Martin, 2009). Routine Activities Theory is the most widely utilized theory to explain why victimization occurs. The current study assesses this explanation of sexual victimization among college students with a particular focus on capable guardianship. Using data collected at a western Pennsylvania university, a multivariate analysis will examine the risk factors for sexual victimization among male and female college students. Policy implications and future research will be discussed.
