Creating a comprehensive data collection plan for violence prevention

Abstract

In May 2014, Long Beach, CA adopted a violence prevention plan, Safe Long Beach: Families, Schools, and Communities, modeled after the National Youth Forum on Violence Prevention created by the Obama administration. This initiative involves stakeholders from city and county agencies, nonprofits, and private industry, which creates a unique challenge for data collection and information sharing. Currently, data are collected and maintained by each stakeholder. Safe Long Beach, however, requires the development of a single data center/depository for the use of all stakeholders. This project, informed by a similar initiative in Louisville KY, will determine how each stakeholder is collecting, storing, using, and sharing their data to ensure that data are captured consistently across violence reduction programs. This presentation will detail our comprehensive data collection plan and challenges encountered through the process
