The study of crime and criminology is greatly influenced by those who advocate the discipline through teaching and research. Educators have a great influence on their students, particularly when their passion for the discipline is reflected in the classroom. While many academicians possess advanced knowledge and understanding within their respective field, their pedagogical efficacy may not necessary parallel their disciplinary expertise.
Despite an educator’s advanced degrees and experience within the field of crime, criminology, and the greater criminal justice system, few graduate curricula provide future academicians any insight to the significance of understanding learning theory and pedagogical best practices.
By doing so, not only can educators enhance their pedagogical efficacy, but can advance and influence their student’s interest in the field, thus cultivating a new generation of practitioners in the study and research of criminology.
