Disparities in Programming for Probationers

• In Event: Mass Probation and Inequality: The Purpose, Form, and Effects of Probation

Abstract

Probation revocations often result from failure to complete mandated programs and services. A major theme in addressing the needs of probationers is to tailor programs and services to meet their specific issues due to responsivity differences. Using data from six jurisdictions, we examine the degree to which programs and services provided to probationers embrace the needs of the probationers and are tailored to the key differences that affect receptivity to programming--age, gender, and racial issues. The analysis will explore the overall components of the program and how they address age, gender and racial differences. From this study, we will present a framework for increasing the responsivity of programming to meet the needs of the population.
