Implementing Unique Pedagogical Experiences for Students: Data Collection and Fear in Parks.

• In Event: Developing and Implementing High Impact Practices: Student and Instructor Perspectives

Abstract

High Impact Practices (HIPs) have been shown to result in increased retention, deeper levels of learning, and increased GPA. This paper presents on the planning and implementation of a HIP for students across multiple disciplines that included multiple instructors. The HIP involved a mixture of lecture, in-class activities, and field experience. Students engaged in data collection in local and state parks using multiple methods to examine fear of crime, safety, and disorder. Outcomes including advantages and obstacles for these types courses will also be discussed.
