Learning through Experience: The Benefits of Hands-on Courses in Criminal Justice

Thu, Nov 17, 9:30 to 10:50am, Hilton, Steering, Riverside Complex

Abstract

In the Spring of 2016, a group of undergraduate students were given the opportunity to step outside of the classroom and gain some critical research experience in the criminal justice field. Through participation in a high impact class, students were able to explore theoretical frameworks, survey construction and critiques, data collection through in-person surveying, as well as a wide range of learning activities. This presentation will explore the non-traditional approaches, experiences, and learning techniques that students engaged in during this class on camping, crime, and fear.
