Abstract

Numerous research studies have been conducted on confidence in the police among the general public. Much less attention has yet been given to immigrants. Confidence in the police among immigrants may influence their law abiding behaviors and acculturation process. Based on survey data collected from 3,000 immigrants throughout 60 countries, this study assesses the effects of a variety of general and immigrant-specific explanatory factors of confidence in the police. In addition to individual level factors, country level indicators such as government corruption, maturity of democracy, and ethnic diversity were included in the hierarchical linear modeling analytic method, hence yielding broader implications for immigrant policy and future research.
