A Panel Analysis of Prison Misconduct

Thu, Nov 17, 9:30 to 10:50am, Hilton, Grand Salon 18, 1st Level

Abstract

The two specific objectives in the present study are: (1) to integrate General Strain Theory with the classic prison deprivation literature to extend some of the more recent studies that have attempted to explain the effects of existing and new stressors on incarcerated populations, and (2) to determine whether GST is capable of unmasking important relationships between strain and deviant behavior among individuals within aversive environments (as would be expected in both GST theory and the classic deprivation model).
In contrast to these findings, importation measures (e.g. age, education, gang affiliation, substance abuse, and prior history) from this same model were not significant, indicating marginally more support for a deprivation natured model for understanding prison adjustment.
