Non-fatal Shootings and Clearance Rates

Wed, Nov 16, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Grand Ballroom D, 1st Level

Abstract

Traditionally, homicides receive a great deal of investigative attention that leads to relatively high clearance rates when compared to other types of violent and property crime. Much less is known about the clearance rate for non-fatal shootings. This paper examines levels of clearance rates for non-fatal shootings. Additionally, the paper considers the level of risk for future involvement in violent crime for participants in non-fatal shootings. The implications of low clearance rates for violent crime risk and perceptions of justice are considered.
