In-Prison Vocational Training and Post-Release Employment in Florida

Abstract

In-prison vocational training is a prominent, time-honored correctional program that has been the subject of numerous outcome evaluations. Such attention is understandable given the appealing nature of vocational training. These programs strive to rehabilitate inmates by teaching them job skills that will increase the likelihood of post-release employment, thereby improving the reentry process, and most importantly, reducing recidivism. Yet, few studies consider how vocational training may actually improve post-release employment. This study examines the relationship between in-prison vocational training programs and post-release employment opportunities in Florida. Implications for vocational training theory, research, and policy as well as future research directions are discussed.
