Development of and Desistance from Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration

Abstract

This presentation focuses on development of and desistance from intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. In the first part of the presentation results from a literature review will be presented. The sixteen relevant studies that were identified focus on: a) Describing development of IPV perpetration over the life course; b) Examining the relationship between IPV perpetration and general and/or violent offending; c) Studying desistance factors for IPV perpetration. The review shows that findings from the limited body of literature are mixed. Moreover, the review identifies several gaps in existing research. For example, there is a lack of research from non-Anglo-Saxon countries, and especially longitudinal research on desistance factors for IPV is extremely scarce. In the second part of the presentation, empirical findings from a research project that aims to study IPV perpetration using a life course criminological approach will be discussed. Using existing longitudinal datasets from the US, the UK and the Netherlands, this project aims to conduct a cross-national comparison of the developmental characteristics of and desistance factors for IPV perpetration.
