Police Officer Perceptions of Racism, Media, and Use of Force

• In Event: Problematizing Policing: Comparing Citizen and Police Perceptions

Abstract

Drawing upon data gathered from a survey and in-depth interviews, this paper examines police perceptions of race relations and use of force within a midsized city in a Southeastern region. Specifically, this research reports police officer experiences of racial tensions within their work life and community and how these tensions interfere with their ability to perform their job effectively. Further, this paper also reports their views of the use of force, media depictions of police brutality, and reflections regarding the extent race factors into their decision to use force on suspects. While much is known regarding public and community opinion on these matters, this paper provided much needed emphasis on officer perceptions of these highly contentious issues.
