International Students’ Perceptions of the Police

Thu, Nov 17, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Grand Salon 16, 1st Level

Abstract

The number of international students in United States is rapidly increasing and there is a growing concern of the needs and resources available to them. One of the less common but significant concern is to find out how international students view and use the first agency of criminal justice system. Their positive perceptions may make them feel safe, more likely to call police for help and report crime, and ultimately facilitate the process of their integration into the society. Thus, the purpose of the current study is to: 1) illustrate how unique international students are, 2) understand their perceptions of the law enforcement, 3) and implications of those perceptions for the criminal justice system.
