An Examination of Strangulation Cases in the Criminal Justice System

Abstract

Although strangulation is one of the most lethal forms of intimate partner violence, there is very little research exploring strangulation and case outcomes. A review of strangulation cases in San Diego found victims of prior attempted strangulation are seven times more likely to become homicide victims (Strack et al., 2001). Using data collected from 150 strangulation cases, the current study assesses descriptive factors of strangulation cases and also explores case outcomes in a county that been dedicated to improving response to these cases.
