Treasures of the Enclave: Accessing Data from DYS, PYS, RYDS, and NJP

Abstract

This session describes newly or soon to be released data from four longitudinal studies funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP): Denver Youth Survey (DYS), Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS), Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS), and the Northwestern Juvenile Project (NJP). Data from each study will be processed and released by the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD). Due to the sensitive nature of the information contained in these data sets, none of them will be available for public download. The data from PYS and NJP will be accessible through the ICPSR virtual data enclave (VDE). The data from DYS and RYDS will be accessible only at the physical data enclave (PDE) located in the ICPSR facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Because each of the four data sets is treated as restricted, interested users must go through an application process in order to get permission to use these data. In this presentation we (a) describe the application process, (b) demonstrate how data analysis within VDE works, and (c) discuss possibilities to facilitate access to the data restricted in the PDE.
