What is the overlap and sequencing between firearm related victimization and (violent) offending?

Abstract

A large body of research has established the overlap between victimization and offending, but little research has examined the overlap and/or sequencing between firearm related victimization and (violent) offending. The purpose of this paper is to utilize police data from a police department in a mid-sized city in the northeast on firearm related incidents to: (1) determine the prevalence of firearm related violence; (2) examine the overlap between firearm related victimization and violent arrests; and (3) examine the sequencing between firearm related victimization and firearm related offending. The implications for policy and practice as well as areas for future research will also be discussed.
