Findings from the Randomized Experiment with Body Worn Cameras at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

Abstract

As the nation rushes toward implementation of body worn cameras in police departments, there is a growing body of research evidence around body worn cameras. This presentation will describe the outcome analysis findings for a recently concluded National Institute of Justice-funded randomized controlled trial pertaining to body worn cameras in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The analysis focuses primarily on the impact of body worn cameras on police behavior (e.g., stops, arrests, complaints against officers, and use of force incidents), and includes an analysis of potential contamination effects between treatment (camera wearers) and control groups in the study.
