Testing and Evaluating Body-Worn Video Technology in the LAPD: One Year Later

Fri, Nov 18, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Hilton, Chart C, Riverside Complex

Abstract

This paper describes findings of the NIJ-funded evaluation of body-worn cameras in Los Angeles one year after implementation of the cameras. Researchers will describe the multiple methods used in their process and impact evaluation, including randomization, propensity score matching, time series, and pre-post designs. The impact of body-worn cameras on police behavior (on uses of force and civilian complaints) and on officer attitudes toward the cameras both before and after implementation will be presented. The researchers will also provide recommendations for police and other criminal justice agencies based on their study.
