Community Factors Affecting Elder Abuse in Nursing Homes

Fri, Nov 18, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Jefferson Ballroom, 3rd Level

Abstract

The topic of elder abuse is one that most Americans typically would choose to ignore because of its dark nature. Unfortunately, this topic has been somewhat ignored in the research as well. Using data from 203 nursing homes in a southern state, we examine attributes of nursing homes that make them more or less likely to have substantiated problems of abuse in their facility. Preliminary results suggest that there are important differences in the numbers of violations in nursing homes based on contextual and geographic factors. Implications for policy and future research are discussed.
