Detecting norm change: A survey of young men in New York City neighborhoods

Abstract

John Jay researchers surveyed young men (ages 18-30) in communities operating Cure Violence program in New York City neighborhoods and several comparison neighborhoods. The surveys measured respondents’ experiences of violence as well as their attitudes toward the appropriateness of violent behavior in varying situational contexts. The project relied on respondent driven sampling (RDS), a method of gathering data quickly and efficiently from traditionally hard to reach populations. The analysis of the survey data allowed researchers to assess changes in community norms toward violence among the age group most affected by violence.
