Understanding Substance Use Trajectories among Probationers and the Impact on Criminal Behavior

Abstract

Approximately 21.6 million adolescents and adults in the United States meet criteria for substance dependence on illicit drugs or alcohol (SAMHSA, 2014). Probationers are at 2 to 3 times the risk of having substance dependence compared to non-probationers (Freucht & Gfoerer, 2011). While there is a growing body of research that examines substance use patterns and trajectories, there are still large gaps in our knowledge, particularly with respect to those involved in the justice system. We use baseline and follow-up interview data with a group of probationers to explore the trajectories of drug use over 6 months. The identification of group membership includes factors related to substance use, prior treatment, and criminal behavior. The importance of latent class findings for both research and policy will be discussed.
