Who? Where? When? An Evaluation of Demographic and Contextual Factors on Probation Outcomes

Abstract

This analysis examines the impact of established predictors on probation success utilizing a large randomly selected sample of adult female probationers. Initial findings suggest that race, location, offense severity, age, and risk assessment scores significantly predict probation failure. This study then examines interaction effects between race and location as well as race and offense severity. Results indicate such interactions should be considered when studying probation success, despite reason to be cautious about their interpretation. Theoretical, practical, and research implications are discussed alongside study limitations.
