Lundman on Private Corporate Justice

Sat, Nov 19, 9:30 to 10:50am, Hilton, Quarterdeck C, Riverside Complex

Abstract

This presentation pays tribute to the work of Richard Lundman by revisiting a previous collaboration in the area of policing. Among the many ways Professor Lundman contributed to the discipline of criminology was his concern over private police potentially administering justice in the same way as local police but with little oversight. His premonition led to a 1991 co-authored article in the journal Social Problems titled “Private Corporate Justice” which dealt with the way private police shaped public images of crime. This presentation describes his contribution to the research area of private police, the ways in which this article influenced other research and his contributions to future research.
