Suffer Silently, Silently Suffer: Veterans' Voices on Treatment by the State

Abstract

Previous studies of state crime victimization have demonstrated how military veterans can be understood as victims of their governments. This study addresses how veterans themselves may or may not view their hardships as connected to state negligence, states crimes of commission, or other forms of state crime. Using data from interviews with U.S. veterans we develop an empirically informed understanding of state crime victimization and consider how interviewee narratives compare to critical criminological discourse about the victimology of state crime.
