The Effect of Differential Police Patrols on Citizen's Fear of Crime

Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of citizens regarding the effect of differential police patrols on citizens’ fear of crime. Specifically, this study examines 1) the effects of police foot patrols on citizen’s fear of crime, 2) the effects of motor vehicle patrols on citizen’s fear of crime, and 3) the effects of increased number of police officers patrolling the streets on citizen’s fear of crime. This study controls for the effects of prior victimization as one of the factors that has a positive correlation with fear of crime. The analyses are based on 423 usable surveys, collected in the Alleghany County, New York.
