The Forgotten Ones: Exploring the Pervasiveness and Correlates of PTSD among Correctional Staff

Thu, Nov 17, 8:00 to 9:20am, Hilton, Canal, 3rd Level

Abstract

Mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), among correctional staff has yet to receive appropriate attention from prison administration and researchers alike. To date, few studies have explored the prevalence and the correlates of PTSD among correctional staff and its effects on the staff performance and the prison environment. This study uses data from a southern state-funded grant which includes comprehensive information on over 800 correctional staff, both security and non-security, from all 13 adult facilities in the state. Analysis is presented to revealing not only the pervasiveness of PTSD and its impact on staff, but also the underlying consequences for the facilities such as absences and disciplinary infractions. Policy implications and recommendations for prison administration are also discussed.
