Suicides are the leading cause of mortality in U.S. jails however, most jails do not have adequate processes in place for reviewing these incidents and assessing their effect on the jail environment. The Vera Institute of Justice will develop, implement and evaluate a Self-Harm Analysis and Review Protocol (SHARP) for responding to cases of serious self-harm in the New York City jail with the aim of designing a nationally replicable sentinel event review model. The presentation will provide project updates and next steps.
