Validating the Perceived Racial/Ethnic Discrimination Scale in Pittsburgh Youth Study

Thu, Nov 17, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Hilton, Canal, 3rd Level

Abstract

Although a number of studies have suggested that racial/ethnic discrimination may contribute to racial/ethnic disparities in the criminal justice system, prior research has used limited items to measure racial/ethnic discrimination without an assessment of the scale’s psychometric properties. To address this gap, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the item-level structure and validity of an existing scale measuring perceived racial/ethnic discrimination. Data for this study come from a large sample (N = 503) of young adult males from the Pittsburgh Youth Study. Findings and implications will be discussed.
