Considering Juvenile Institutions in Prison Abolition Dialogues

Abstract

Prison abolition in the United States, as a response to the carceral state which relies on a logic that treats social issues as criminal issues, has received increasing attention by practitioners, activists and scholars. Although literature considering prison abolition as a theoretical framework and response to mass incarceration is increasing, little attention has been paid to applying this framework to the institutions that detain, incarcerate, punish and control young people within the U.S., such as juvenile prisons and detention centers. This presentation seeks to incorporate critical perspectives of the juvenile justice system with prison abolition frameworks.
