Sexual-Orientation-Based Victimization in the Workplace

Abstract

Interest in issues impacting the LGBTQ community has risen in recent years, driving an increase in hate crime victimization inquiry. The relationship between sexual orientation and victimization has been examined only in limited terms thus far, however. This work offers an extension to relevant literature via a theory-based suggestion for framing victimization on the job, a discussion of important concerns for work in this area, and an empirical examination of the link between self-reported sexual orientation and self-reported workplace victimization. This approach is supported by previous research suggesting victimization may vary alongside distinctions in the ways and the places different sociodemographic groups spend their time. Policy implications and direction for future research are discussed with a focus on identifying need for improved crime reduction efforts and victims’ resources for underserved populations.
