The Impact of Religiosity and Self-Concept on Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes

Abstract

The relationship of religiosity and identify to deviance encompasses the role of moral communities as an intervening mechanism through which deviance may be interrupted or reduced within networks of religious people. Using data from the Drug-Abuse Treatment Outcomes Study (DATOS) of adult drug treatment provided by community-based programs, I explore the effect of religiosity and self-concept development within four treatment modalities on the outcome of continued substance abuse. How are within individual changes in religiosity and self-concept associated with changes in treatment outcomes? Change in religiosity and self-concept from intake through participation in outpatient methadone, short-term inpatient, long-term residential, and outpatient drug-free treatment are examined using five year follow up interviews administered at 60-months after treatment termination among those admitted to treatment in 96 programs in eleven mid to large sized U.S. cities between 1991 and 1993.
