The British Crime Survey routinely asks respondents how many nights per month they go to nightclubs and bars. This has been related to crime patterns but usually without strong findings. This paper combines several years of the survey and then disaggregates daytime, evening and nighttime crimes. Disaggregating the dependent variable gives much stronger and sharper results than studies failing to separate the time of day that offenses occur. This paper helps us compare routine activity theory to lifestyle theory, and to understand how they differ in emphasis (despite substantial overlap).
