Factors Related to the Physical and Mental Health of Inmates: An Exploratory Analysis

Abstract

Although the United States’ prison population is decreasing overall, the health problems produced by prison’s environmental conditions and subsequently transported back into the community, are considerable. To date, very little criminological research has collectively examined the physical and mental health of reentering offenders as a potential cause of recidivism. Using a sample of male inmates in a large southern state, this study explores the factors that affect physical and mental health of incarcerated individuals, especially as this group nears release into the community. Discerning the correlates of the health and well being of reentering inmates has repercussions for both correctional policy and public health. Findings and policy implications will be discussed.
