From Slavery to Jane Crow to Say Her Name

• In Event: Centering Black Women's Lives in the Matter of Justice: Where Do We Go From Here?

Abstract

This paper will explore the historical legacy of intellectual activism from Black women as leaders in community spaces and formal social justice organizations leading to contemporary strategies to promote social justice. Based on this social reality of state sanctioned violence experienced by a large majority of the Black community, Black women took leadership into their own hands to develop strategies to promote social justice in the Black community. It traces the legacy Black women have held in identifying ways to transform society through sociopolitical thought and activism. It will explore the conscious effort to empower and liberate those most impacted by state sanctioned violence and poverty from systematic regimes.
