Dancing Around the World for Social Justice

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the relevance of a book on dance and social justice ? What is the relevance of dance for marginalized groups, for people in prison? Can dance subvert regimes of punishment? Can dance and art, more generally, help us interrogate the carceral regimes ? Our academic disciplines? How can choreographic propositions be translated into social propositions?
This book emerged from an international conference where dancers, choreographers, artists, students, ex-prisoners, academics from different horizons met in order to exchange on stimulating dance practices in different contexts where the issue of social justice is the most pressing. We hope that this book will be an inspiration to both the dance world and the prison environment.
