Gender Differences in African American Offending: A Gendered Analysis of The Theory of African American Offending

Abstract

The theory of African American offending stipulates that the male-female disparity in offending by African Americans is due to gender differences in racial socialization practices as well as Black men’s and women’s perceptions of and experiences with criminal justice injustices and racial discrimination (Unnever and Gabbidon, 2011). As such, the current research examines gender differences in African Americans’ perceptions of and experiences with racial discrimination, criminal justice injustices, and their exposure to racial socialization strategies. Findings from the research provide partial support for Unnever and Gabbidon’s (2011) explanation for gender differences in offending,
