Creating a Correctional Officer Academy: Implications from a National Survey

Thu, Nov 17, 7:15 to 8:15pm, Hilton, Grand Ballroom A, 1st Level

Abstract

Although attendance at a police academy is a standard job requirement in law enforcement, the training mandated for correctional officers across states is variable. Based on a national survey of state departments of corrections, this research examines the extent and nature of correctional officer training. This survey reveals both the lack of quality training and best practices that might be employed in other jurisdictions. The policy recommendation is made for every state to create a correctional officer academy, which involves training in offender management and treatment.
