Do They Matter? A Survey of Student Perceptions on University Conduct Codes

Abstract

Previous research on students’ perceptions of conduct codes are limited in relation to examining more than a few independent variables. This current research aims to build on the previous literature by examining various factors and their relationship with students’ understanding of drug and alcohol conduct codes and how this knowledge impacts their actions. Using a convenient sample, 329 surveys were distributed to assess the student population at a university located in the east coast. Seven independent variables were measured to find whether knowledge of student alcohol and drug conduct codes impacts students alcohol use, drug use, and current GPA. Results from this study can be used to assist colleges and universities in future policy implementation, making students aware of the violations by their actions, and to plausibly reduce alcohol and drug use.
