The digital age of technology has brought new platforms for individuals who sell their companion services within the sex industry. In recent years, the use of online classified advertisements on websites geared towards companionship and escort services has increased. This study uses data collected from companionship advertisements posted on a popular Internet classified advertising website, referred to as Backpage, to examine embedded messages related to traditional gender stereotypes and attributes. Results indicate that common themes and patterns are conveyed through the use of language, symbols, and photography. Further, the themes and patterns identified were found to promote and reinforce traditional gender stereotypes and attributes
