Envisioning A Broader Role For Philanthropy in Prison Reform: How Collective Impact Can Unite the Prison Reentry Movement

Abstract

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in criminal justice reform. Movements such as the #cut50 campaign, a bi-partisan effort to reduce the prison population by 50 percent in 10 years, demonstrates how much things have changed from the "tough on crime" rhetoric that dominated much of the 1980s. Philanthropy has historically and will continue to play a large role in the reform movement. As this paper suggests, however, if the current momentum is to continue, there must be a push towards a "collective impact," collaborative approach in the field of prisoner reentry.
