Military Experience and Prison Behavior: An Examination of Prison Misconduct

Abstract

Although military personal only makes up a small portion of the United State’s general population, it makes up a consistently larger portion of the United State’s prison population. With the Department of Defense’s current plan to downsize the military even further, the number of veterans will likely increase which, in turn, will likely lead to increases in the veteran population within prisons. As such, it is essential to understand if and how this population varies from the general prison population. The current paper uses data from the Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, 2004 to examine differences between veteran inmates and other inmates in the nature and extent of prison misconduct. Policy implications and directions for future research will also be discussed.
