The Italian Mafias in the World: Pull Factors and Diversification of Activities

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the presence and activities of the Italian mafias across the world. It shows that the presence mafia groups in foreign countries varies significantly across types of mafia, activities, and destination countries, and that a variety of pull factors
can be identified. The paper also discusses strategies to conduct systematic assessments of the mobility of mafia groups and reviews the information currently available. Finally, it suggests strategies that could improve the quality of data for future research.
